Rust (2009/Affirm/Sony DVD)

I was surprised to see Corbin Bernsen doing anything with
Affirm Films, especially because their releases have been highly formulaic and
predictable, but as the writer, director and star of Rust (2009), he has made what is easily the best of their otherwise
forgettable releases to date as a one-time pastor faced with multiple disasters
at once. His family has been killed, his
best friend is accused of the killings and this releases a return of all kinds
of repressed things he never expected.
Though the main drive of the teleplay is obvious and we
know how this will be resolved somewhat, I like Bernsen and he does give a good
performance here while trying to tell a serious story and express his own
thoughts and feelings on faith. Though
it is only worth a look at best, I liked some of what he tried and he saves his
own project from being a dud.
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is a little
weak throughout with motion blur and some softness, but this is still one of
the best-looking Affirm release by default. The Dolby Digital 5.0 mix is not great and has
a limited soundfield, but well-recorded enough, if a little soft at times. Extras include Bernsen’s feature length audio
commentary track, Deleted Scenes and four Behind The Scenes featurettes.
