The Man With No Name Trilogy (A Fistful Of Dollars/For A Few Dollars More/The Good, The Bad & The Ugly/MGM Blu-ray Set)

Picture: B     Sound: C+/C+/B-     Extras: B     Films:

A Fistful Of Dollars (1964) B

For A Few Dollars More (1965) B

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (1966) B+

We had previously reviewed all three films as part of the five-film Sergio Leone Anthology DVD set, which you can read more about at this link:

Ugly was also issued before on its own as a single Blu-ray, which we covered and the link of which follows below.

That leaves the performance of each film in playback.  The 1080p 2.35 X 1 digital High Definition image on all three films show their age including grain that you can expect from the small frames of the Techniscope format, but if any of the prints here were in their original three-strip, dye transfer forms, we would see less grain and even better color than we get.  All still have their moments of good color and can look good, but Fistful could use a little more work and More looks a little better, yet could also use some work.  Ugly is a restored print, though not dye-transfer Technicolor despite working from such a print.

All originally monophonic releases, each has been upgraded to DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless 5.1 mixes, but that only allows you to hear the age of the elements, which I expected.  I just wish the Sergio Leone music was more stereophonic if nothing else, but Ugly got the best audio upgrade.  Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono versions are included on all three films, but I prefer the DTS in all cases.  Extras repeat the already reviewed DVD editions.
